The Plot Thickens: Houston’s Indie Bookstore Crawl Returns for Its Third Chapter

April is for the book lovers…

BY REMINGTON TAYLOR

Houston, We Have a Bookstore Crawl

Forget the bar crawl, Houston has something even better in store for book lovers all over the city. And the only hangover is a towering stack of books you absolutely needed.

Every April, independently owned bookstores across the greater Houston area come together to open their doors and dare you to visit as many as you can. It’s called the HTX Bookstore Crawl, and it’s everything you can imagine. For one whole month, readers across the city will take on the literary adventure of touring bookstores near and far. It’s you and your bingo card against the world and you might even fall in love with a book you never saw coming. It’s thirty one incredible reasons to explore your city.

How It All Started

As every reader knows, every great story has an origin and this one starts inside a bookstore. Back in 2022 on Independent Bookstore Day, Blue Willow Bookstore posted a map of the indie bookstores in Houston, Texas to shine light on all the different bookstores across the city. Two years later the bookstore crawl would be orchestrated and in motion so people had a chance to visit as many bookstores as they could. The word spread and readers showed up wanting to purchase a book and stamping their bingo card as proof of their visit. The second year was just as successful, if not more. What started as a handful of shops has grown to a sprawling literary map all the way from The Woodlands down to Galveston.

How It Works

Stop by any participating bookstore to pick up a bingo card. From there, the journey is entirely yours. You visit any shops in any order and at any pace that suits you. Browse the bookstore, buy a book, and get your bingo card stamped! It’s that simple. That’s the magic.

This year, the 2026 Bookstore Crawl features 31 bookstores participating, the biggest lineup yet. Hit at least 15 stores by April 30th, and you’ll be entered into a raffle for prizes! For the full list of participating bookstores, rules, and an interactive map, head to https://htxbookcrawl.com/

"It's you and your bingo card against the world, and you just might fall in love with a book you never saw coming."

Why It Matters

In an era where small businesses are more vulnerable than ever and buying a book can be as easy as a single click, it is important to still show up for our indie bookstores. Nothing will ever come close to the community and love for literature that you’ll only find within a local independent bookstore. They will sell you a book and possibly change your life all within a five minute conversation. They’ll host author events for writers who go on to win awards. They are literary communities dressed up as retail, and they deserve every bit of our support.

For participants, the crawl is a chance to turn discovery into an adventure by finding bookstores that have been in your city all along, waiting for you to stumble upon them. You’ll see events that the stores host regularly and maybe one will spark your interest. You’ll meet strangers who love books just as much as you and maybe even make lifelong friends over a shared recommendation. This city has a rich and vibrant literary identity and it deserves to be celebrated.

A PERSONAL NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

I’ve had the honor of joining both the 2024 and 2025 Houston Bookstore crawls, where my best friend and I were able to visit every single bookstore on the bingo card. They are some of my favorite memories, and honestly two of my greatest accomplishments. To all the hardworking booksellers and organizers who make this happen every year, thank you. You’ve given me, and this whole city, something truly worth showing up for.

It’s April 1st which means it is the first day of the third HTX Bookstore Crawl. So get out there, buy a book, chat with a bookseller! Have your life changed by the Bookstore Crawl one stamp at a time and then fall in love with all the books you discovered.

Thanks for exploring this chapter with me, keep your eyes open for what's next.
